Jan Chamberlain

Jan ChamberlainWhere do you Live? Darien, GA

Since: 2003

Why did you choose the city / state you now live in? When first exploring the Georgia coast Darien caught me hook, line and sinker. The simple small town charm, historic intrigue and the untouched beauty of the surrounding area touches my soul. Georgia is my home state. I was born in south Georgia and have deep roots in north Georgia. Though I was transported to New England during my childhood, I came back to Georgia at age 18 just as quickly as possible.

What do you love most about where you live? The friendly warmth of the people and small town culture of Darien that offers true southern hospitality pulled me in right from the beginning. Combine that with the rarely seen beauty that encompasses this quiet unspoiled area of coast line and I’m lost in the pull of the Georgia coast. Remarkable tides ebb and flow through the vast marshes and tidal creeks. The ever changing light and tides provide a new experience every day. The beaches of the undeveloped barrier islands of Sapelo and Black Beard are rare treasures. Being a beach bum I love to visit these beaches.

What is your favorite restaurant in your town? Now that’s a tough question. For such a small town we have the most amazing restaurants. It really depends on what I’m in the mood for. If its romance and a special evening, definitely Darien River House. For fun on the waterfront it has to be Skippers and for a quieter place where the locals go Sapelo Station.

What is your Age Group: 46-59

What is your favorite All Time Movie? Gone With the Wind

Do you have any Pets? Yes, we have pets. Our dog Sassy is everyone’s favorite. She was a stray who adopted us. As far a breed, she has some yellow lab in her and lots of love. She is the official greeter and will meet you in the driveway. We have three outside cats, Ernie (short for Ernestine) a beauty with the look of a Russian grey has seven toes on her front paws and six toes on her back paws. Then there is Wild Man. He was adopted twice from the shelter and returned each time with the complaint that he was to wild. Guess he was waiting for us because here he is Prince Charming personified. And Sind Bad….his name says it all. A feisty, playful and often aloof until food is involved.

What is your favorite thing to do in your free time? Kayak the marshes with my camera handy.

What is your favorite season and why? Summer, I have always loved long summer days and the slower pace of life summer brings.

If you won the lottery, what is the first thing you would do? Hire Jimmy Buffet to play at my next birthday party.

If you could learn to do anything, what would it be? I would learn to sail.

If you could witness any event past, present or future, what would it be? The Atlanta Braves’ next World Series win.

Which celebrity do you get mistaken for? Hmmm, some of my friends refer to me as Martha . . . Martha Stewart but I don’t resemble her in the least. Dorothy Hamil and I once shared the same hair style.
